On Tuesday 3rd September, Jared Martin, the sole Ballydrain competitor, finished 3rd in the annual Mill Hill Race. This is a 1 mile uphill race in Castlewellan. Jared covered the mile in 6 minutes, what an amazing time!
Saturday 7th saw the 100th East Antrim Marathon Series (EAMS) event. Donna Cleary was 1st lady in the marathon while William Brown was 3rd overall, David Wade was also running. Claire Ingram was the 3rd female finisher in the half marathon.
Further afield, on Sunday 8th, 10 Ballydrain Harriers completed the infamous Great North Run. This is a half marathon which runs from Newcastle to South Shields. The first Harrier to arrive by the sea was Colin Campbell in 1.58. The first female Harrier to the finish was Shirley McCloskey in just over 2 hours. It was a Great North Run first for Sandy O’Neill, James McBratney and Valerie and Michael Gibson. The Harriers running have so far raised over £3,000 for Marie Curie.
On Sunday also, Jenna Hoey and Dovydas Pliauga both completed the Lithuanian 10k and Half Marathon respectively. Jenna ran the hilly 10k in 58 minutes while Dovydas achieved a new PB, in his homeland, covering the distance in 1hour 27 minutes.
In the Czech Republic, Heather and Raymond Stanex participated in the Birell Prague Grand Prix. Heather ran the 5K in 23.53 and Raymond completed the 10k in 45.29.
Just down the road, Ballydrain had 2 podium places in the Killyleagh 10k. Kyle Ross won the event in 37.37 and Kirsty Bogle was the 2nd lady home in 51.09. Darren Weir was the only Harrier in half marathon, he finished 7th overall in a super time 1.36.55.
