Friday 28 June saw the return of the Ards half marathon which started at the new Blair Mayne Leisure Complex in the centre of the town. Conditions for the 448 runners taking part were tough on the night with sunny, warm weather to contend with as well as the hilly route. Neil Weir (Willowfield Harriers) was the overall winner in 1:16:05 and Ballydrain’s Amanda Perry won the ladies race in 1:35:20, this placed her 35th overall. Nathan Beattie led the 33 Harriers running home in 1:25:17, he placed 7th overall and 1st in his MO age category. Daniel Burns was second home for the Harriers placing 13th overall in 1:29:05 and 2nd in his MO age category. Colin Stevenson was third to cross the line for the Harriers in 1:29:20 which was 17th overall and 2nd in his M50 age category. Second and third ladies home for the Harriers were Amanda Jackson (1:43:46) and Claire Ingram (1:49:38). Well done to Violet Davidson who completed the 13.1 miles in 2:37:41 taking the top spot in her F70 age category. Congratulations to the two Harriers who were volunteering as pacers – Michael Barton and Paul Edgar paced the race perfectly, Michael coming in at 1:29:24 as the 1:30 pacer and Paul 1:39:57 for the 1:40 pacer.
Spelga Skyline took place on Saturday 29 June in the Western Mournes. The 13.1 mile course is a challenging run with a 1,550m overall ascent. It started at the foot of Slievenamuck and took in the summits of Slieve Meelbeg, Slieve Loughshannagh, Slieve Muck, Slievemoughanmore, Pierces Castle, Rocky Mountain, Hen Mountain and Cock Mountain. Seamus Lynch (Newcastle AC) won the race in 2:27:08. Five Harriers were amongst the 74 finishers: Mark Duggan (3:34:58), Andrew Wallace (3:36:05), Mark Elliott (4:03:33), Paddy Ritchie (4:30:45) and Stephen Stewart (4:51:35). Well done to all.
The East Antrim Marathon Series held their ‘Skools Out’ marathon in Greenisland on Sunday 30 June. Harrier William Brown placed first in a time of 3:32:16 and Craig Bradley third in 3:41:58.
The Club wish junior member Jared Martin all the very best for his trip to Zermatt in Switzerland this coming weekend. Jared is representing Ireland on the Junior Mountain Running team at the European Championships.1.7.19
